How to put WhatsApp on your business card the right way

WhatsApp is the default way Gulf professionals talk to clients. It belongs on every digital business card. The catch is that doing it badly is worse than not doing it at all.

M W TAP One tap to chat. No save needed.

The right link format: wa.me

The official, free, no-account-needed format is https://wa.me/971XXXXXXXXX. The 971 is the UAE country code, with no leading zero. Replace 971 with 966 for Saudi Arabia, 974 for Qatar, 973 for Bahrain, 965 for Kuwait, and 968 for Oman. Anyone in the world can tap this link and start a chat with you without saving your number first. That last detail matters more than people realise.

Why the wa.me link beats sharing your number

If a card just shows your phone number, the other person has to copy it, open WhatsApp, paste it into a new chat, and only then can they message you. Most people do not bother. A wa.me link removes every step in the middle. Tap, type, send. The save the number step happens later, after the conversation has started.

Optional: add a preset opening message

You can append a default message that opens with the chat. The format is https://wa.me/971XXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%20from%20your%20card. The text after ?text= is URL encoded. Spaces become %20. Use this if you want the conversation to start with context. A consultant might use "Hi, found you on MyKard, would like to discuss a project." An event organiser might use "Hi, met you at GITEX." A simple Hi is fine too.

The five mistakes to avoid

Where the WhatsApp link should appear

On your digital business card, WhatsApp should be one of the top three contact buttons, alongside Phone and Email. On MyKard cards WhatsApp is a built-in field, you just paste your number. The icon, label, and link are generated automatically.

Beyond the card itself, put your wa.me link in your Instagram bio, your LinkedIn About section, your email signature, and your Google Business Profile. Each one is a one-tap path to your inbox.

WhatsApp Business catalogue versus a card

WhatsApp Business has a catalogue feature where you can list products and services. It is useful for retail and product sellers. For service professionals like consultants, freelancers, and agencies, a digital business card with a wa.me button is a stronger first impression. The card carries your photo, role, links, and the conversation starts in the right place.

Two-step setup checklist

  1. If you do not have one already, install WhatsApp Business on the number you use for work.
  2. Add your wa.me link to your MyKard card by pasting your phone number into the WhatsApp field. The card builds the link for you.
